The death of a father and son this week in a two-vehicle accident has heightened ongoing concerns about the safety of the Highway 18-81 intersection south of Freeman in Hutchinson County.

On Tuesday, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) heard from Meridian Corner restaurant owner Roland Svartoien and manager Abby Streyle. The business is located at the Highway 18-81 intersection, the site of another fatality and other accidents and near-misses in recent years.

Why has this notoriously bad intersection been Ignored by many for 50-60 years? Look at all the officials that have ignored it for years. So Dak DOT/County Commissioners/Legislative Rep from this district. Local Sherriff and Hiway Patrol. It a loooong list of fools that have ignored this DEATH TRAP intersection? South Dakota can't afford couple more stop signs/rumble strips as warning/Couple flashing lites on stop signs (4 to be exact). Come on voters hold all these fools feet to the fire.

What is so sad is that the DOT will not even slow the traffic down.
