How do I generate normal distribution data in Excel? ›

To create a bell curve graph in Excel, enter your data, calculate the mean and standard deviation, and then use the NORM. DIST function to create a normal distribution set based on your data. Select this set and insert a Scatter Plot with Smooth Lines to get your bell curve.

Select 'Descriptive Statistics and Normality' and click OK to open the following dialog box. There's a lot of output but concentrate on the QQ-plot and the Shapiro-Wilk to assess normality. The Shapiro-Wilk p-value of 0.5847 is much bigger than 0.05 so normality can be assumed.

In some cases, this can be corrected by transforming the data via calculating the square root of the observations. Alternately, the distribution may be exponential, but may look normal if the observations are transformed by taking the natural logarithm of the values.
